They may also contain those species which are totally different from those found in the bordering systems.Įcotones have so many important roles in the ecosystem, some of them are listed below:Ī. They are known to be zones of tension as they show conditions intermediate to the bordering ecosystems.ĭ. They may vary in size from narrow to wide.Ĭ. Example: agriculture field and forest (it is a man-made one).ī. Some of the major characteristic features of ecotones are discussed below:Ī. Ecotone can also be seen in the area where one water body meets with another water body like estuaries and lagoons or at the boundary line between water and land like marshes.īoth of these ecotones are differentiated on the basis of the presence of large plants that rise from the roots attached to the submerged substrate and because of this reason they are found in areas where ample light is available at the bottom of the basin to permit growth. Mountain ranges can also create ecotones due to the changes in the climatic conditions on the slopes. Some of the very known examples of ecotones are marshlands (between dry and wet ecosystems), mangrove forests (between terrestrial and marine ecosystems), grasslands (between desert and forest), and estuaries (between saltwater and freshwater). They may also exist along a broad belt or in a small pocket, such as a forest clearing, where two local communities blend together. They are home to many flora and fauna as they have an area transition between two ecosystems and biomes. They are known to be of great environmental importance as they often contain those species which are not found in the overlapping communities. during the current global ecological crisis, ‘ecotone’ aims to become an emblem and signal of the commitment of paris and its metropolis to tackle environmental issues. the overall concept and design has taken inspiration from nature resulting in a proposal that reimagines how cities are designed and creates a positive vision for the future of our urban environments.Ecotone is known to be a transitional area, which is present between two ecosystems or two different pleasant communities like forest and grassland. The architect’s design, and use of timber construction, envisions paris as a future sustainable city. large amounts of glazing are also implemented to gain light and create openness and transparency from one space to the next. an abundance of greenery is used throughout the design to forge a connection to nature and reflect the sustainable aspect of the build. the building takes on the form of a massive staircase with numerous terraces and patios that invite daylight into work and social spaces. The structure by duncan lewis is conceived of two hills that combine trees and the timber construction. ![]() located in the coteau area of southern paris, the substantial proposal is designed to function as a multi-use space comprising offices, hotel, restaurants, shops and sports hall. named after the biological term for the transition zone between two ecosystems, ‘ecotone,’ the central concept of the scheme is to become a link and interface between the city and nature.Īll images courtesy of duncan lewis scape architecture ‘ecotone’ is the latest project by duncan lewis scape architecture, that intends to be europe’s largest timber construction.
